Addiction is defined as a chronic, relapsing brain disease that is characterized by compulsive drugseeking and use, despite harmful consequences. In the brain of an addict, they crave the thing that is hurting them. They are craving the opposite of what they need and what is good for them. But, often this is how a lot of people function, not just alcohol addicts. Students binge netflix even though they have six assignments due the next day. Spouses cheat even though they know it's wrong. People eat tons of junk food even though they know they can't pronounce one ingredient on the nutrition label. People crave the exact opposite of what's good for them.

I decided to depict this through alcoholism. I used the rope in this picture to symbolize the addicts physical and mental connection and addiction to the alcohol. I also used body language as a symbol in this photograph. The subject has her head in her arms to the the shame and embarrassment of her situation. This is to show that she is aware the addiction is bad for her, but she can't break the tie. She's aware of what the addiction is doing to her, yet she can't stop.
