artist statement

Social media was made in order to keep in touch with old friends and to reconnect with friends and family that you lost touch with one the years. But, along the way, social media turned into an outlet for bullying, a feed for self doubt and an addiction for teens who seek others approval. It’s appalling to see the amount of chaos that comes from social media.

It is my opinion that social media catalyzes teen’s poor views of body image and self- worth. It allows for people to compare their whole life, the highs and lows, to the “perfect” part of a person that they want to share online. It leaves them feeling jealous, unhappy, and unworthy.

I used this concept to create this artwork. I had the subject turn away from the camera in order to symbolize her feeling lost in her body image and sense of self. I also had the phone in focus and her head out of focus to emphasize that the focal point of the image is the social media account and the chaos it creates for her. She spends countless hours scrolling and comparing everyones life to her own. It is designed to cause her jealousy and unhappiness. The sense of competition it creates for everyone to have the most followers, the most likes, and to show off that they’re having the best time is the reason for all the chaos among teens today.
